Piñera, Mgr Bernardino

Bernardino Piñera Carvallo (born September 22, 1915) is a Chilean prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He was born in Paris, France. He was ordained priest on April 5, 1947. At the age of 100 he is the oldest Catholic bishop of South America.





Their parents were Jose Manuel Piñera Carvallo and Elena Figueroa Castillo. He has three deceased brothers: Joseph and Marie Loise Paulette Piñera Carvallo.

He studied medicine at the Catholic University of Chile where he earned a medical degree in 1941 . He studied in the city of specialization American from Cleveland , Ohio .
Religious Life [ edit ]

In 1947 he graduated in Theology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile , in order to be ordained a priest on April 5 of 1947 by the Archbishop of Santiago , Cardinal Jose Maria Caro .

As a priest he was General Counsel of the Catholic Action and national advisor of the National Association of Catholic Youth Femenina.Se also served as Vice Chancellor of the Catholic University of Chile between 1950and 1953 and Secret Waiter SS in 1957.

On 11 February 1958 the Pope Pius XII chose Bishop Prusiade holder and auxiliary to Bishop Manuel Larraín Errázuriz , Bishop of Talca . He was consecrated bishop by Bishop Larrain on 27 April 1958. They acted as co-consecrating Monsignor Pio Alberto Fariña and Monsignor Emilio Tagle Covarrubias . He chose as his episcopal motto Servus Tuus Sum Ego .

On 10 December 1960 the Pope John XXIII appointed him bishop of Temuco . I took possession of the diocese on January 7, 1961.

Between 1962 and 1965 he participated in the four sessions of the Second Vatican Council . He also participated in the Third Conference of Latin American Bishops in 1979 and in the Synod of Bishops in Rome in 1967 and 1980.

The December 28, 1977 the Pope Paul VI accepted his resignation from the Diocese of Temuco, which presented to fully play his role as Secretary General of the Episcopal Conference of Chile . What replaced in officeMonsignor Sergio Contreras.

On 2 July 1983 the SS John Paul II appointed him archbishop of La Serena . He took possession of the Archdiocese on 7 August 1983. He replaced Archbishop Juan Francisco Fresno who was named Archbishop of Santiago . In 1984 he was appointed Apostolic Administrator ad nutum Sanctae Sedis of the Prelature of Illapel .

Between 1984 and 1987 he was President of the Episcopal Conference of Chile , position from which organized the Apostolic Visit of Pope John Paul II to Chile in 1987.

He completed ecclesiastical studies at the Seminary of Santiago and the Faculty of Theology at the Catholic University of Chile. Bachelor of Theology, 1947.

He was ordained priest on April 5, 1947 by Card. José María Caro, Archbishop of Santiago.

He was Deputy General Counsel of Catholic Action, General Counsel of Catholic Action and national advisor of the National Association of Young Christian Women.

He also served as chaplain of the Home of the Employee (1948-1958); Advisor to the Young Christian Workers (JOC);Deputy Director of Economic and Social Secretariat of Catholic Action; Vice Chancellor of the Catholic University of Chile (1950-1953) and SS Secret Camarero in 1957.

Pope Pius XII chose Bishop tit. From Prusiade y Auxiliar de Mons. Manuel Larraín, Bishop of Talca, February 11, 1958. He was consecrated bishop in the Church of the Savior on April 27, 1958 by Mons. Manuel Larraín, Bishop of Talca. Co-consecrating were major Mons. Pio Alberto Farina, Bishop tit. of Citarizo, and Msgr. Emilio Tagle, Bishop tit. Arethusa. As episcopal motto adopted "" Servus Tuus Sum Ego "".

Pope John XXIII transferred him to the diocese of Temuco on 10 December 1960. He took possession of the diocese 7the January 1961. He succeeded Mons. Alejandro Menchaca, who had resigned in 1960.

He made the ad limina visit in 1974. He participated in the four sessions of the Second Vatican Council. He held the First Synod of Temuco, in 1968. He participated in the Third Conference of Latin American Bishops in Puebla, 1979; and the Synod of Bishops in Rome, 1967 and 1980.

In order to play full time as Secretary General of the Episcopal Conference of Chile, he resigned from the diocese. His resignation was accepted by Pope Paul VI him on 28 December 1977. He went to live in Santiago. What it happened in Temuco Mons. Sergio Contreras.

Pope John Paul II promoted him to Archbishop of La Serena on July 2, 1983. He took possession of the Archdiocese on August 7, 1983. He succeeded Mons. Juan Francisco Fresno, moved to Santiago. He was appointed Apostolic Administrator ad nutum Sanctae Sedis of the Prelature of Illapel, August 11, 1984. He had as Bishop Coadjutor with right of succession to Bishop. Francisco Jose Cox since 1985.

Because of age he resigned the Archbishopric, resignation became effective on September 30, 1990. The succeeded Msgr. Francisco Jose Cox that day.

He has held various positions in the Episcopal Conference of Chile, among them was its President from 1983 to 1988; and the CELAM.

After his resignation he retired to live in Santiago in the convent of San Francisco.
